Properties of building stone

Stone is one of building material used for masonry construction. They are large in size and cover greater area with less number. Stones have greater durability and weather resistance property as compared to bricks.

Appearance and Texture

Stones should have homogenous structure and be uniform in color. When stones are used for face work the appearance is of great importance

Weight

Stone used for building construction should have specific gravity greater than 2.4. Greater the weight , higher will be it’s resistance to weathering actions of wind, rain, etc.

Porosity

Stones used for building construction should not be porous. They should have least amount of void. Porous stones disintegrate easily when water passes through the voids.

Workablity

Stone used for face work should be workable as they need to molded to desired shape. As workability increase strength of stone will reduce.
